Former Sheffield Wednesday star Gerald Sibon netted the only goal of the game on the stroke of half time to move Heerenveen level on points with fourth place AZ Alkmaar.
NAC Breda moved into the top half of the table with a convincing 5-2 victory over NEC Nijmegen.
The hosts raced into a five-goal lead before half time with a superb hat-trick from Cedric Seedorf ( 1, 13, 44) and a brace from Orlando Engelaar (9, 24).
NEC Nijmegen showed a bit of pride in the second half and made the score look a little more respectable with goals from Zico Tumba (66) and Renevan Rijswijk (74).
Paulo Rink's late goal earned Vitesse Arnhem a precious point after a six-goal thriller with RKC Waalwijk.
Aleksandar Rankovic gave Vitesse an early lead after just five minutes, but Rick Hoogendorp levelled matters on 56 minutes.
Emile Mbamba restored Vitesse's lead five minutes later before Khalid Boulahrouz hit back for RKC.
Hoogendorp netted his second on 74 minutes to put RKC in front for the first time, but Rink popped up two minutes from time to secure a draw for Vitesse.
