Eredivisie: Ajax boss Frank de Boer not taking Eredivisie title for granted

Ajax will hope to take another step towards retaining their Eredivisie title when they host Heerenveen on Friday.

Ajax have won their last six matches and are unbeaten in the league since January.

Heerenveen, though, are on a similar run of form having won six times in their last seven outings, a defeat to FC Groningen earlier this month the only blip.

However, after defeating PSV Eindhoven 3-2 in their previous outing, Ajax remain on course to gain an historic 32nd national championship.

Victory would take them eight points clear of second-placed Vitesse Arnhem.

Manager Frank de Boer, though, sounded a note of warning.

He told reporters: "We are doing well and took an important step last but there are still 12 points to play for.

"Only the press say we are champions.

"This is not so. Not that I have doubts, but we need to play against sc Heerenveen, NAC, Willem II and FC Groningen.

"Heerenveen have beaten Feyenoord and PSV. "

PSV Eindhoven will look to avenge that defeat to the Amsterdam team when they travel to AZ Alkmaar on Saturday night.

PSV are currently in third, a point behind Vitesse but head coach Dick Advocaat is determined to claim the runners-up spot.

Advocaat said: "The title challenge may be over, but we will keep fighting for second place."

In the race for the Champions League, Feyenoord face Vitesse Arnhem at the De Kuip in a crucial clash.

Vitesse are currently one point ahead of both PSV and Feyenoord but in their last match squandered a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Roda JC.

The form of centre-forward Wilfried Bony, who has notched 30 goals this campaign, has been integral to Vitesse's success this season and has seen him linked with a summer move to Chelsea.

The Ivorian told Voetbal International: "If I go to England that would be perfect because of the league, the atmosphere - basically everything. However, the leagues in Germany and France are also interesting destinations."

Of Vitesse's efforts to land the Eredivisie, he said: "The title? I don't know, but I know we can beat the three other top teams."

In the battle for a Europa League spot, FC Twente travel to relegation-threatened VVV Venlo, while FC Utrecht host NAC. Twente are three points ahead of Utrecht in fifth.

Willem II will hope to make ground on VVV Venlo when they play fellow strugglers Roda JC.

Elsewhere, FC Groningen take on Den Haag, Heracles face RKC Waalwijk and NEC play FC Zwolle.
