The club fear he has suffered damage to the cruciate ligament in his right knee, although the extent of the damage is not yet known.
Van der Gun has been told to rest for a fortnight, after which he will be sent for a series of tests.
The scans will ascertain as to whether Van der Gun will require surgery, but even if he is given the all clear he is likely to be sidelined for some time.
