Fortuna Sittard were the only team that could drag them into the relegation play-offs but, despite thrashing Willem II 4-1, they could not overcome the massive goal difference deficit.
Fortuna are now confirmed as the final team in the play-offs, and they start their Group A campaign at FC Zwolle on Sunday.
De Graafschap survived thanks to Promes`s goal, but for around an hour it looked as if Ernie Stewart`s strike for NAC on 23 minutes would see them fall into the play-offs.
Stewart could have put the game beyond the home side 11 minutes after his goal, but his penalty was saved by goalkeeper Stefan Postma, and Promes pounced on 63 minutes to secure a point and top-flight football.
In the other game, Fortuna got off to the perfect start, Joos van Barneveld scoring in the opening minute.
Willem II equalised virtually from the re-start, courtesy of Jatto Ceesay, but the home side regrouped and goals by Dennis Gerritsen, Joost Volmer and Marco Heering ensured that Fortuna enter the play-offs in fine form.
