NAC are just five points behind leaders Ajax, and are in with a real shout of securing a European spot if they continue their fine run in the second half of the season.
Ten Cate has masterminded the improvement, having led them to ninth place last term, and his efforts have prompted the club to tie him to a long-term deal.
Ten Cate has been in charge of the Pearl of the South since 2000, having earlier coached Heracles Almelo, Go Ahead Eagles, Sparta, Vitesse Arnhem, KFC Uerdingen 05 and MTK.
Meanwhile, promising midfielder Rob Haemhouts has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with NAC.
The 19-year-old has come through the youth ranks at NAC and impressed ten Cate enough to earn a lengthy deal.
Ten Cate will be looking for Haemhouts to progress and press for a regular place in the team before the start of next term.
