Ajax have gone top of the Eredivisie but were grateful to escape with a point after a 2-2 draw with Utrecht

Ajax slipped up but still moved back to the top of the Eredivisie table with a 2-2 draw at home to FC Utrecht on Sunday.

Frank de Boer's side would have been hoping to secure victory - after PSV Eindhoven had jumped above them on Saturday with a 3-0 win at Roda JC Kerkrade - but eventually nicked a point after scoring two late goals at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Nacer Barazite put Utrecht ahead early in the second half and Patrick Joosten appeared to secure all three points after he doubled their lead six minutes from time, but Davy Klaassen pulled one back for the home side and Arkadiusz Milik netted a penalty in the 89th minute for Ajax.

The result leaves Ajax and PSV level on 75 points with three games to go this season, while Ajax are top with a better goal difference.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Excelsior climbed out of the relegation zone with a 1-1 draw at home to Heerenveen, as Willem II dropped into the bottom three with a 2-0 defeat against ADO Den Haag.

Excelsior took the lead through Brandley Kuwas in the 37th minute, only to be pegged back by Sam Larsson four minutes later.

The point was still enough to see them climb to 15th, though, as Mike Havenaar and a Frank van der Struijk own goal saw ADO Den Haag win at Willem II.
