The 28-year-old Macedonian was shown the door by NEC at the end of the season, but his preference was always to stay in Holland.
Talks with Willem II failed to bear fruit, which prompted Zwolle to step in.
Hristov quickly agreed terms and signed a one-year deal with an option in place for a season-long extension.
The former Barnsley man will be asked to fill the void left by Richard Roelofsen, who was moved on following a clash of styles with the coaching staff.
Hristov spent three seasons with NEC, following his move from The Tykes, and becomes Zwolle`s second capture of the summer after Marco Parnela.
