Zongo damaged knee ligaments in February 2001 and has waged a persistent battle to return to full fitness for Vitesse.
The Burkina Faso forward has undergone four operations on his knee and finally saw the light at the end of a bleak, long tunnel on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old played 25 minutes for Vitesse in their Amstel Cup clash with Fortuna Sittard and Zongo will be anxious there are no injury repercussions from his outing.
Vitesse's tussle with Fortuna also heralded the return from injury of Jhon van Beukering.
The young striker picked up a knee injury while on loan at FC Zwolle in March and it had been feared he would not play again this year.
But van Beukering appears to have emerged from his comeback unscathed and will now be pressing for an Eredivisie return.
