The defender sustained a bad knee injury in August 2002, and broke down in a comeback attempt during pre-season.
The stopper suffered a build-up of moisture in the joint which caused him to rethink his recuperation programme.
"I did no power exercises and I've taken more rest. The feeling is better now than a month ago," declared Knol.
"The knee is more flexible and there's less moisture in it. Also with shooting I feel more confident."
The defender is wary of returning too soon however after his extended spell on the sidelines.
"Now it's alright, but first I have to get a good start by training with the first-team squad and then play a game with the reserves."
