The Gelredome side are ensconced in the lower reaches of the Eredivisie table but coach Edward Sturing viewed Friday's home game with Willem II as a chance to kick-start their season.
Things looked good when Emile Mbamba (pictured) volleyed them in front on eight minutes.
The lead did not last long, however, as James Quinn converted from the penalty spot on ten minutes.
Willem II assumed control of the game on 24 minutes when Tom Caluwe capitalised on some fine work from Romano Denneboom to fire home.
Jhon van Beukering brought Vitesse level with a 56th minute penalty but he turned from hero to zero ten minutes later when being dismissed, as the home side finished the game with ten men.
