Vitesse Arnhem's bid to stay in the Dutch top-flight was handed a boost after an industrious 3-1 victory on their travels at Sparta Rotterdam.
Vitesse's first Group A game in the Dutch play-offs ended in triumph, after a double salvo from Nicky Hofs and one from Paolo Rink cancelled an earlier opener from Yevgeny Levechenko in the first half.
In the group's other match-up, VV Venlo destroyed Helmond Sport 6-0.
First half strikes from Jon van Loenhout and Bas Jacobs were followed in the second period with a goal from Vento Jans and a magnificent hat-trick from a rampant Bernard Hofstede.
In Group B, FC Volendam's grip on Eredivisie football was loosened after falling 4-0 to Heracles Almelo.
After Gijs Luirink's first-half dismissal, Volendam had no response to an emphatic Heracles second half performance.
A 59th minute strike from Roel Buikenna was followed by three goals in the final ten minutes. Late goals from Thijs Sluijter and Yuri Rose added to an 80th minute Wilson own goal.
The only game which failed to yield goal came at De Graafschap, where Excelsior Rotterdam will be happy to have secured a stalemate.
