PSV Eindhoven missed out on the chance to close the gap at the top of the Eredivisie after they were held to a 1-1 draw at ADO Den Haag.

Starting the day in third place, PSV had the opportunity to close the gap on the top two and move to within two points of leaders Feyenoord - having played a game more.

They made a perfect start, with Davy Propper firing home from inside the area after a smart turn by Jurgen Locadia, who laid the ball off for the midfielder to net his seventh of the season.

However Mike Havenaar was on hand to head into an empty goal in the 87th minute after Joen Zoet made a mess of a long-range effort to frustrate PSV.

Excelsior grabbed a crucial three points in the relegation battle with a battling 1-0 win over fifth-placed Vitesse.

Mitchell van der Gaag's side have moved three points clear of the drop zone following back-to-back wins, the latest of which came courtesy of a fine finish from Nigel Hasselbaink.

The forward raced onto a fine pull-back from Mike van Duinen and without breaking stride, confidently side-footed the ball high into the roof of the goal to leave Eloy Room with no chance.

The visitors dominated the ball, but were unable to find a way back into the match as they proved wasteful in front of goal, forcing Warner Hahn into just one save all match.

Roda also claimed a big win in the relegation fight, beating Sparta Rotterdam 3-1 to move above them in the table.

Abdul Ajagun opened the scoring with a smart near-post flick following good work down the right by Mikhail Rosheuvel in the 14th minute, and doubled his tally after the break with an easy finish following some poor defending.

Thomas Verhaar curled into the top corner with just over 10 minutes to go to give Rotterdam some hope, but Rosheuvel smashed home in the 89th minute to seal a crucial win for the hosts.

Enes Unal hit a brace for FC Twente to take his tally to 15 for the season as his side cruised to a 3-0 win over NEC, with Fredrik Jensen scoring the other.
