Though possessing Sparta a more talented side, it was De Graafschap who sprinted out of the starting blocks and pressed Sparta back.
Sparta were powerless, as de Graafschap created chance after chance.
They took the lead through a penalty, converted by Robert Fuchs, after Eric Viscaal was brought down by Elzinga in the box.
Sparta began better in the seconf half, although de Graafschap were still the better team playing with a ferocious work-rate, especially Marino Promes.
Almost inevitably, it was Morrocan international Ali Elkhattabi (above) who got Sparta back in game after Marbus had headed back Mendes' pass.
De Graafschap's keeper Postma will have been disappointed not to have stopped the effort though.
Soon afterwards man of the match, Promes, hit home to put his side 2-1 ahead.
Sparta will find it very difficult to survive now and may look to Feyenoord to loan some players, as they cannot afford to buy any themselves.
