Ajax missed the chance to close the gap on league leaders PSV after conceding a last-gasp equaliser in a 3-3 draw at lowly FC Twente.
Marcel Keizer's side raced into a 2-0 lead at the break following Lasse Schone's first-half double and looked to be cruising towards three points.
However, two goals from Stefan Thesker levelled the scores before Justin Kluivert, fresh from a wonderful hat-trick last week, grabbed Ajax's third in the 79th minute to put them back in front.
The scoring did not finish there, Tom Boere popped up to head home Michael Liendl's 89th-minute free-kick to earn Twente a point and end a run of four straight losses, while Ajax sit seven points behind PSV, who have a game in hand.
Reigning champions Feyenoord moved into fifth place as they extended their unbeaten run to five matches with a 1-0 win against Vitesse.
Nicolai Jorgensen got the only goal of the match in the ninth minute when he tapped in from close range after terrific work from winger Sofyan Amrabat.
Willem II ended a run of four matches without a win with a resounding 3-1 victory against Heracles.
Fran Sol scored a wonderful flicked finish to open the scoring before a double from Bartholomew Ogbeche put the hosts in control after just 21 minutes. Sebastian Jakubiak grabbed a late consolation for the visitors with his first touch after coming on as a substitute.
Groningen picked up their first away win of the season with a convincing 3-0 win at ADO Den Haag.
Ritsu Doan scored in first-half stoppage time to put the visitors ahead before fine strikes from winger Oussama Idrissi and Juninho Bacuna wrapped up victory.
