Girard has been suspended for two matches, although the ban for the second match is suspended for three years.
The 58-year-old was charged by UEFA after a heated exchange with Schalke coach Huub Stevens during their 2-2 Champions League draw on October 3. Montpellier have also been fined for the behaviour of their fans and players during the match.
A UEFA statement said: "Montpellier have also been fined 17,000 euros for the throwing of missiles and fireworks by their fans, and for the improper conduct of the team (five cards or more).
"An appeal may be lodged against the decision within three days of receipt of the written grounds for the decision."
