UEFA have charged Aberdeen and Apollon Limassol following the disturbances during their Europa League qualifying encounter at the AEK Arena in Cyprus on Thursday.

Riot police were forced to intervene in the away section in Larnaca as Aberdeen fans clashed with stewards after the 2-0 (3-2 aggregate) defeat.

The Scottish Premiership side have been hit with two disciplinary charges for "crowd disturbances" and "no stewards travelling with supporters", the latter being a breach of UEFA's safety and security regulations.

Apollon Limassol face three charges of "setting off fireworks", "throwing objects" and "improper conduct of team".

Flares were thrown from the home section early in the second half, landing close to Aberdeen keeper Joe Lewis in his own goal, while referee Stephan Klossner threatened to abandon the game if fans' behaviour did not improve.

"I heard the stewards were very heavy-handed, going in with tear gas and being very aggressive," Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes said following the game.

"When supporters behind the dugout are spitting at our players, myself and the staff that is when stewards need to be more visible."

Aberdeen later announced they had opened their own investigation into the disturbances in the away section.
