Uefa waits on ref's report

Uefa will await referee Massimo Busacca's report before deciding whether Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger faces any disciplinary reaction.

Uefa will await referee Massimo Busacca's report before deciding whether Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger faces any disciplinary reaction.

Wenger was unhappy with the Swiss official following Arsenal's 3-1 defeat by Barcelona in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday evening.

Busacca sent off Robin van Persie for a second yellow card for shooting at goal just one second after he had blown the whistle for offside - a decision the Arsenal striker described as a 'joke'.

At the final whistle, Wenger confronted Busacca and the conversation reportedly continued down the tunnel.

The Gunners boss claimed in his post-match press conference that Uefa officials were 'shocked' by Busacca's decision to dismiss Van Persie, but European football's governing body will wait before pursuing any case against Wenger.

Waiting

A Uefa spokesman said: "We are waiting for the Uefa match delegate's report and the referee's report.

"If anything is mentioned then the control and disciplinary department will decide whether to open a disciplinary case or not."

Uefa also confirmed that there is no avenue for Van Persie to appeal his one-match suspension for his red card.

The spokesman commented: "Under Article 44.4 of Uefa's disciplinary regulations, appeals are only allowed against cautions on the grounds of mistaken identity."

Uefa always refuses to comment on the individual performances of referees but did confirm that Busacca's handling of the match will be evaluated.

"Referees are always evaluated," added the spokesman. "There is a referee observer who evaluates their performance.

"These are taken into account internally in terms of appointments but we never make that public."
