Captain puts Australia in qualifying box-seat

Harry Kewell scored the only goal of the game as Australia recorded a 1-0 victory over Iraq in Brisbane in World Cup 2010 qualifying. Australia captain Kewell hit the back of the net in the 47th minute to allow his side to move four points clear at the top of Group 1 in the Asian qualifying zone. Meanwhile, bottom-of-the-group Iraq are facing a battle to qualify after securing only one point from their three games played. Australia were made to fight by Iraq in a tight first half, but two minutes after the interval Kewell was in the right place to head past goalkeeper Noor Hassan. Kewell, who has been linked with Celtic as his contract at Liverpool comes to an end, climbed highest in the box to nod in a precise cross from Blackburn midfielder Brett Emerton. Australia were then forced to withstand heavy pressure from Iraq and the home side were grateful to Mark Schwarzer after the shot-stopper produced a string of fine blocks. However, Australia held on for the points and are now well placed ahead of away fixtures against Iraq and Qatar on 7th and 14th of June.
