The Romanian, who also represented Sheffield Wednesday, Bradford City and Southampton during an eight-year spell in the Premier League, has been working his way up the coaching ladder since hanging up his boots in 2003.
He has impressed in Russia with Kuban Krasnodar and capital outfit Dynamo, and his profile continues to rise.
Crystal Palace were strongly linked with his services in the wake of Ian Holloway's departure, but they eventually plumped for the experience of Tony Pulis.
Petrescu was willing to discuss a position with the Eagles, but no agreement was reached.
The 45-year-old has no complaints at having remained in Moscow, where he is under contract until 2015, but admits he harbours ambitions of working in England again at some stage in the near future.
He told DigiSport: "I hope I will be a manager in London one day, but I still have a contract with Dynamo Moscow for another year-and-a-half so signing for another team is out of the question right now."
