Former Swansea boss Michael Laudrup has turned down the opportunity to take over as coach of Denmark.

The 51-year-old, who numbered Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid among his clubs during a superb playing career, is without a job at present, having left his position as coach of Qatari side Lekhwiya in June.

And he was among the front-runners to succeed Morten Olsen, who recently quit after 15 years in charge of the Denmark national side.

But Danish Football Association (DBU) administrative director Claus Bretton-Meyer has told the Ritzau press agency that Laudrup is no longer a candidate.

"Michael has terminated discussions because he doesn't think that the position of coach is the right one for him at the present time," said Bretton-Meyer. "He has personal reasons."

Laudrup played 104 times for Denmark between 1982 and 1998, scoring 37 goals, and he was an assistant coach with the Danish team between 2000 and 2002.

Denmark have failed to qualify for Euro 2016 after they were beaten 4-3 on aggregate by Sweden in a two-legged play-off last week.
