Gareth Southgate? Glenn Hoddle? Soccer Saturday pundits on next England boss

Who should be the next England manager? We asked the Soccer Saturday pundits for their views following Roy Hodgson's departure.

Gareth Southgate remains the favourite with Sky Bet, despite reports suggesting he is wary of stepping up from the U21 post on a full-time basis, with Glenn Hoddle, Jurgen Klinsmann, Harry Redknapp and Eddie Howe also among the frontrunners with the bookmakers.

Here's who Paul Merson, Phil Thompson, Matt Le Tissier and Charlie Nicholas expect to get the job...

Merse says: Hoddle a no-brainer

He's a very good international manager, the best we've had since Terry Venables, and is a no-brainer for me.

In 1998, before he was sacked, we took a very good Argentina to penalties in the World Cup despite playing with 10 men for over an hour. Could the current team have done that? Don't make me laugh.

I'd like to see Gareth Southgate and Alan Shearer in as his assistants, then one of them take over after the World Cup.

They've both played in major tournaments, which is very important, so now give them the chance to shadow the best.

The FA's three-man task force of Martin Glenn, Dan Ashworth and David Gill will meet on Friday to begin the process of appointing Roy Hodgson's successor

Le Tiss says: Southgate will get it, unfortunately

If you were forcing me to bet on what the FA will do I'd probably back Southgate just because he's already in the system, but I don't agree with that.

The list of names I've seen isn't particularly compelling if I'm honest. There's no one candidate that stands out above all others.

If you're looking for an English manager then you've got the likes of Eddie Howe, Sam Allardyce and Alan Pardew, but you need the best man for the job now.

FA chief executive Martin Glenn says we'll be looking globally for the best man, and if you want England to be successful, that's what we need.

Charlie says: Give it to Hoddle

I've always been a big fan of Hoddle. He got dismissed at a time when he was making progress. We all disagreed with his views, but does that make him unsuitable to be a football manager?

He's the best manager England have had in a long time. If you're looking for a man to instill the right identity into the team then he's the one. He believes in the passing and moving way and yet understands the passion.

I don't see any other English managers coming through that are ready and I don't think Southgate is anywhere near ready to change English football. If the FA put that on his shoulders then they'll regret it.

Would they go after Arsene Wenger? I think they've tried before and failed. Jurgen Klinsmann is the other interesting one if he is interested.

Thommo says: Southgate appointment planned

They've put this plan in motion so I think they've got to do it for the sake of the next generation of coaches.

I think they have to go and give Southgate an opportunity. He should be the first interviewee if he wants it, which doesn't seem certain.

There may be other candidates with better credentials but he's had these young players and he's won the Toulon Tournament with the current youngsters.

I feel that if that's the way we have set up for people to progress through the ranks then that would be a slap in the face for those who have bought into it for the FA not to give him the job.
