Defender backs improving side, as Carrick seeks regular role

Matthew Upson is certain a 'disciplined' England side are heading in the right direction under manager Fabio Capello. West Ham United defender Upson was on target as England recorded a 2-1 triumph over Germany in Berlin on Wednesday night. Capello has led his charges to success in eight of his 10 matches in charge, and Upson is confident the team are progressing game-by-game. He told Sky Sports News: "We know we put a good performance in. In terms of the squad and the culture of the place, it is really strong.

"I think we are on the right track. There has been consistent improvement in our performances. The squad is very disciplined now. Everybody knows their job." Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick also voiced his backing for the national side's form while expressing his determination to retain his place in the squad after landing his first cap in over a year. He said: "Winning games obviously helps us gather momentum. Everyone is enjoying it and when you enjoy your football you tend to play that bit better, so long may it continue." The 27-year-old added: "Of course (I want to stay in the squad), that's the aim. But it is up to me to play well enough through Christmas and January to warrant a place again."

Capello deployed a young side bereft of eight regular starters and Shaun Wright-Phillips feels the display demonstrated the quality of England's emerging talent. The Manchester City winger added: "There were a lot of young players on the team and they all played well and that is something to look forward to in the future."
