England Women were denied a first win against France since 1974 after Toni Duggan saw a late strike ruled out in a 0-0 stalemate.

With the game heading into injury time at the end of the friendly at Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium, substitute Duggan found the net.

But the striker was ruled to have controlled the ball with her arm rather than her chest and France were instead awarded a free-kick.

Not since a clash at Plough Lane 42 years ago have England defeated France, who sit third in the world rankings, two places above their opponents.

There have been nine defeats and six draws in the intervening years, with the most recent match a 1-0 victory for France in the group stage of last year's World Cup.

That result did not cost England, who went on to finish third, and they showed the confidence they continue to take from that stunning run as they began a series of games building up to next summer's European Championship.
