Phil Neville deletes Twitter account after becoming England Women head coach

 Phil Neville

Phil Neville has deleted his Twitter account on the day he was named head coach of England Women.

Neville has faced accusations of sexism based on the content of specific tweets on his account from six years ago.

One tweet from January 2012 read: "When I said morning men I thought the women would of [sic] been busy preparing breakfast/getting kids ready/making the beds-sorry women!"

The Football Association told Sky Sports News they were aware of Neville's tweets before making the appointment.

In a statement, the Women's Sport Trust said: "We are saddened by Phil Neville's historical tweets and the lack of comment about this from the FA. In the age of MeToo and TimesUp, all individuals and organisations must be more aware of past sexist behaviour and respond to it appropriately."

Earlier on Tuesday, Neville said he was "honoured" to have been named head coach of the England Women. He replaces Mo Marley, who was managing the side on an interim basis since Mark Sampson's dismissal last September.

It will be a first managerial post for Neville, who has previously worked as a coach at Manchester United and Valencia and with the England U21 set-up.

"I am honoured to be given the chance to lead England," said Neville. "With the new coaching team we are putting in place, we can help the players build on their great progress in recent years.

"This squad is on the verge of something special and I believe I can lead them to the next level.

"I can't wait to get out on the training pitch and down to work with an elite group of players at the top of their game."
