Gareth Barry looks to be winning his race to earn a place in England coach Fabio Capello's 23-man World Cup squad, Sky Sports News understands.
The Manchester City midfielder has been battling to overcome the ankle injury he sustained in the defeat by Tottenham Hotspur on 5th May.
He has been undergoing intensive treatment and Capello has been provided with regular updates on the progress of the former Aston Villa man, who is a key member of his usual starting XI.
Barry was put through his paces for the final time on Tuesday morning ahead of the England boss naming his final party for South Africa.
And Sky Sports News has learned that the initial indications on the talented midfielder's fitness are favourable after his latest scan and he could well make the cut.
Barry is not expected to be fit for England's opening game against USA on 12th June, but should come into contention for the further Group C encounters with Slovenia and Algeria.
Capello is due to name his final party later on Tuesday, with seven unfortunate players returning home rather than heading to this summer's showpiece tournament.
