David Beckham is aware that England will not be able to produce another on-field World Cup flop if they win the right to host the 2018 tournament. Ahead of their final presentation to Fifa at 10am on Thursday morning in Zurich, England are odds-on with Sky Bet to come out on top in a vote-off against Russia, Spain/Portugal and Holland/Belgium. Bid ambassador Beckham, alongside British Prime Minister David Cameron and Prince William, has played an influential role in last-minute lobbying to Fifa executives. But after watching from his injury-enforced position among Fabio Capello's staff at this summer's World Cup, the 115-time England international recognises that a repeat of a woeful last-16 elimination in South Africa would be inexcusable in 2018.

Important

Beckham said: "If we have a World Cup in our country we will need a good performance from our players. "It is in eight years' time and I think we have young players who are coming through and will be ready." Beckham, who still harbours hopes of featuring in 2018, wants the likes of Aaron Lennon, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere to make a team to match the achievements of England in 1996, when the hosts reached the European Championship semi-finals. "It is always important that the hosts perform in the competition. For the fans more than anything, to keep your country in the World Cup is vitally important," he added.
Excitement
"One of the things we have looked at with the bid is the excitement of your team doing well. We saw that in Euro 96. It was huge. "There are certain players who have come into the team such as Lennon and Walcott, exciting players who are still young. "Wilshere reminds me of Liam Brady. He is very laid back in how he plays but he has that spark as well. "To be in an Arsenal team like he is playing in and performing like he is - that is the type of player who is the future. "In England we have the best facilities and great grassroots organisations that work together to bring young players through, so there really is no excuse."
