Ex-England boss backing Hodgson for role

Former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson has backed Roy Hodgson as the right man to lead the Three Lions after the Football Association held talks with the West Brom boss. The FA made its approach for Hodgson over the weekend, with the Baggies granting them permission to speak with the manager, and discussed the role with the former Fulham and Liverpool boss at Wembley on Monday. It was seen as a surprise move by English football's governing body after Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp had previously been made a hot favourite for the role following the departure of Fabio Capello in February. Eriksson, who spent five years at the helm of England between 2001-06, believes Hodgson would be a good fit.

Good news

"He will do well," Eriksson told Sport Expressen. "Roy is a fantastic man and also a really sharp manager. "As you know, we are very good friends and he knows football like no-one else. This is good news." Eriksson and Hodgson became friends while managing concurrently in Sweden and later in Serie A, when the Englishman was in charge of Inter Milan while Eriksson was at Sampdoria. The Swede feels it is no surprise the FA, which has frequently said it wants to appoint a homegrown boss, have turned to Hodgson. He added: "First and foremost, he is English. I know they were looking for a domestic coach. "He has done very well at all the clubs he has been at, given the conditions. I am not surprised (they approached him)."
