England boss disappointed by Gerrard sending off

England manager Roy Hodgson was pleased with his side's attitude as they fought back to draw 1-1 with Ukraine at Wembley. The hosts seemed set for a dismal home defeat as they struggled to find a breakthrough following a stunning first-half strike from Yevhen Konoplyanka. But Frank Lampard equalised from the penalty spot with just minutes remaining to salvage a World Cup qualifying point for the Group H favourites. There was still time for captain Steven Gerrard to be red-carded for a second bookable offence and Hodgson thought that was a little harsh. The England boss said: "I don't think there'll be too many people who watched the game who'll disagree with me that some of the yellow cards were hard to take.

Disappointed

"The sending-off of Steven Gerrard too. If he'd committed two fouls in the game I'd be surprised, so of course I'm disappointed in that. "We went a goal down to a wonder goal but I was really pleased with the way we kept playing, probing and trying and didn't resort to any hopeful long balls. "We kept creating chances throughout the game and luckily we eventually got our reward with our equaliser. Who knows, if Steven had stayed on the pitch, we may have got our winner. "All credit to Ukraine. They played well enough in the game and it was a good game of football. I'm pleased to come out with something because had we lost, it would have been very harsh on us."
