Wayne Rooney insists his main focus will be on helping England beat San Marino on Saturday rather than setting a new goalscoring record.

The Manchester United striker has scored 48 international goals in 105 appearances for his country, which puts him just one shy of Sir Bobby Charlton's England record of 49 goals from 106 appearances, a mark which was set back in May 1968.

Rooney looks likely to at least equal Charlton's record when he lines up against the Group E minnows in the European Qualifier in Seravalle, but he says he just wants to ensure that England secure the victory which would see them qualify for Euro 2016.

He said: "I think obviously the most important thing is the team doing well. It's nice to score and hopefully I can do that, but as the manager said the important thing is the team.

"I am looking forward to the game, it's going to be a good game for us and hopefully we can get the victory we want and put ourselves through.

"As a striker you want to score as many goals as you can. If I can get one I will try to push on to get two and try and help us get more goals."

Rooney does admit, though, that it will be a proud moment when he does enter the record books.

"I am sure I will break the record and it will be nice if I can do it on Saturday, so I can put it to the back of my mind and start focusing even more on the upcoming games," he said.

"It is obviously a great achievement if I do it. It would be a really proud moment, but I think when it happens, it happens.

"I will be delighted when it does, but it is not something that I go into games thinking 'I've got to score one or two goals to get the record'.

"I am trying to do my job for the team and I am sure if I do it the way I know I can do it, it will happen."

Rooney was also asked about United's new big-money signing Anthony Martial at England's pre-match press conference.

United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin revealed earlier in the week that Rooney knew nothing about the teenage forward before his move from Monaco on transfer deadline day.

"It's been well documented I haven't seen that much of him to be honest, so I can't really say too much on him," said Rooney.

"I saw him last season against Arsenal where he had a fantastic game, so hopefully he'll be a great signing for us. He's got a lot of ability from what I've seen and I'm sure he'll be a good player for us."
