Gradi uses Vaughan as example

Crewe boss Dario Gradi wants his young players to replicate the patience of former Alex midfielder David Vaughan.

Midfielder Nick Powell, 17, made 17 substitute appearances last season and striker Max Clayton, 16, came off the bench twice with both also part of the England under-17's World Cup squad this summer. First-team oppotunities are likely to come their way again this season and, even if they are infrequent, Gradi has used current Sunderland man Vaughan as an example of how to deal with them. Gradi told The Sentinel: "They are not going to play 40 games but I would like them to play a few, maybe more if we see how they do. "I remember bringing Vaughan on for his debut at Blackburn in 2000 and I took him off at half-time. The next time I picked him he never lost his place. "It won't be the same shock for Nick and Max this year as they have both tasted first-team football before, but, like David, I hope they remain patient."
