McIlroy is believed to have left his post to take over at Second Division Stockport County on Tuesday after a wretched Euro 2004 qualifying campaign in which his side failed to register a single goal.
Birmingham goalkeeper Taylor insisted though that the Northern Ireland squad were completely behind their former manager, and was saddened by his decsision to move on.
"I'm disappointed really," declared Taylor. "Sammy was very down after the Greece game the way we ended the campaign but we are very sad to see him go.
"We were all 100 percent behind him, progress was definitely being made and it was a young squad so it's unfortunate for us.
"People made a big deal of the not scoring, but that was never an issue within the squad.
"You had to see some of the games in which we didn't score to believe it, we were very unfortunate and we had become hard to beat.
"He (McIlroy) was under pressure from the media, but the boys were all behind him and made no mention of the goalscoring problems.
"He didn't mention the desire to go back to club management, but we wish him all the best in what he has decided to do, I'm disappointed he has chosen to do this though."
