Both sides fielded strong sides, with the home fans the first to celebrate when Barcelona star Patrick Kluivert hit the target on 27 minutes.
Kluivert will fondly remember the game at the Philips Stadion, as in slotting home Roy Makaay`s neat back-heel he equalled Dennis Bergkamp`s record of 37 goals in a Dutch shirt.
Holland pressed for a second, with Marc Overmars an impressive figure on the wing, but they failed to turn their possession into a second goal.
Edgar Davids, Andy van der Meyde and Rafael van der Vaart all went close for the Dutch.
A flurry of second-half substitutions did not stop Portugal from fighting back and Simao Sabrosa earned a share of the spoils for the visitors when levelling the scores on 78 minutes.
Simao`s effort was somewhat fortuitous, as his shot deflected off Frank de Boer and past keeper Edwin van der Sar who was playing his first game since December.
Portugal could have snatched a late winner, but van der Sar proved his well-being with a fine save.
Dutch coach Dick Advocaat gave debuts to Ajax youngster Wesley Sneijder and PSV Eindhoven ace Arjen Robben.
Portugal will be pleased to have faced top-class opposition, as they prepare for the hosting of Euro 2004, and the two sides could well meet again at the finals as Holland are currently joint top of Group Three.
