Both sides went into the game level on points at the top of Group 3.
However, Davids, already booked, brought down Karel Poborsky in the penalty ares to receive his marching orders and allow Jan Koller to score from the penalty spot.
Poborsky went from strength to stregth and he added a second himself to really put the pressure on the beleaguered Dutch.
Battling on, the Oranje did grab a goal back through the brilliant Rafael van der Vaart.
However, Liverpool's Milan Baros then added a third as the Dutch stars tired, and Holland now trail Czech Republic by three points with one match left to play.
This means that Holland will have to content themselves with play-off place, and the very real threat of missing out on their second consecutive major tournament.
Moldova picked up a victory over Belarus, as the bottom two teams of Group Three faced off.
Moldova had started the day bottom of the table, but a 2-1 victory at home to Belarus allowed them to leapfrog over their opposition.
Sergei Dadu opened the scoring for Moldova in the 26th minute.
Serghei Covalciuc added a second a minute before the final whistle, but a quick-fire reply by Belarus gave them brief hope of securing a point, when Roman Vasilyuk scored from the penalty spot.
However, time ran out for the visitors, and they are now rock bottom of the group.
