Group One Round-Up

Holland and Czech Republic both won in Group 1 on Saturday.

Goals either side of half time from Arjen Robben and Dirk Kuyt helped the Netherlands to a 2-0 win over Romania.

Romania carry a real threat and Dutch coach Marco van Basten called on his side to be at their most aware in Rotterdam.

The Oranje were given the perfect start when Chelsea flyer Robben netted on 26 minutes.

Any hopes of a Romania revival were snuffed out on 46 minutes when Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt found the target on his home ground to give the Dutch a cushion.

Van Basten's men held firm to retain top spot in Group 1, a point clear of Czech Republic.

Vladimir Smicer was among the scorers as Czech Republic crushed Andorra in World Cup qualifying on Saturday.

The Czechs were much too good for their opponents and kept up the pressure on the Dutch with with the 8-1 victory and Smicer will have done his hopes of finding a new club no harm with a goal in the rout.

Giant strikers Vratislav Lokvenc and Jan Koller set the home side on their way with goals on 13 and 29 minutes respectively, but they were brought down to earth on 35 minutes when Gabi Riera netted only the fourth goal in Andorra's qualifying campaign.

Normal service was resumed on 38 minutes when Smicer, who is set to exit Liverpool this summer, found the target.

Tomas Galasek made it four from the penalty spot on 52 minutes and Milan Baros added a fifth ten minutes from time.

Tomas Rosicky took over the penalty taking duties late in the piece as he made it six and, as the Andorrans wilted, Jan Polak added a seventh and Lokvenc completed the rout with an eighth in injury time.

FYR Macedonia secured the second win of their qualifying campaign when getting the better of Armenia.

Goran Pandev was their hero as he netted both goals, while Armenia's consolation came from Ajax-bound star Edgar Manucharyan.
