The Feyenoord defender is heading to the World Cup finals, and has emerged as one of Holland's best prospects in the past 12 months.
The 22-year-old was given the armband during Holland's draw with Ecuador at the weekend, after Robin van Persie went off.
"It was an enormous honour," he said. "After Robin was changed the technical staff pointed to me - it was fantastic, really something to be proud of."
However, before he departs for Brazil with the Holland squad, Italian sources claim that he is set to seal a move to Lazio.
De Vrij has been watched by Liverpool, Everton, Arsenal and Newcastle, but now appears to be close to a deal with the Roman giants.
And in what could be a double deal with Feyenoord, Lazio are also said to be interested in De Vrij's team-mate Bruno Martins Indi.
Both De Vrij and Martins Indi are rumoured to also be under consideration of Louis van Gaal - their national coach - ahead of him taking up the reigns at Manchester United after the World Cup finals.
