Alessandro Del Piero answered his critics with a sterling display on Wednesday.
Alessandro Del Piero has expressed his delight after turning in a top drawer performance for the Azzurri against Moldova on Wednesday.
The Juve striker had been under pressure to perform after Italy coach Marcello Lippi warned him that his recent form was not enough to make him an automatic selection.
And although Del Piero failed to trouble the scoresheet, he was delighted to be rewarded with a standing ovation as he left the arena.
"I'm really satisfied," he exclaimed. "Scoring would have been good, but I've already scored plenty of goals and the most important thing was to play well.
"Lippi says that I'm not certain to go to Germany? That's up to him, there's nothing I can add. I think it's fair to decide closer to the World Cup when it's possible to judge whether a player had a good season or not."
And Lippi himself was quick to add his own praise, saying: "Del Piero played a really good game and he was rewarded by the crowd. He's a quality warrior."
