Italy striker Alessandro Del Piero has hit back at criticism of his display against Australia.
Italy striker Alessandro Del Piero has hit back at criticism of his display in the last-gasp win over Australia.
Del Piero was selected to start ahead of Francesco Totti for Monday's World Cup second round tie in Kaiserslautern.
But, while Del Piero had little impact on the game, Totti came off the bench to score the only goal from the penalty spot in injury time.
The Italian media were scathing of Del Piero's performance against The Socceroos, but the Juventus talisman has offered a staunch defence of his display.
"(Marcello) Lippi asked me to play a certain type of role and I accepted," stated Del Piero.
"I think I have played in a good way against Australia because, from my side, on a defensive level we haven't risked anything and, from four chances we created, two of them arrived from my foot.
"I usually don't talk in this way, but sometimes it's useless underlining certain things."
Del Piero is likely to lose his place to Totti for Friday's quarter final with Ukraine, but is willing to accept any role Lippi has to offer.
He added: "This year I had a scoring average superior to the one I had in the last few years.
"Sometimes critics are right, sometimes not.
"Now I'll try to do different things should it be asked of me."
