The Stuttgart youngster proved to be one of the revelations of the Bundesliga season and is now aiming to translate his domestic impact onto the international arena.
Lahm only made his Germany bow in a friendly against Croatia in February but he has cemented his position as Rudi Voller's first choice left back.
The 20-year-old admits he is surprised at his elevation up the football ladder and is eager to grasp his opportunity in Portugal.
"Just a few months ago, nobody would have expected me to be here and I certainly could not imagine it," said Lahm.
"This is a dream. I'm only 20 and I have a lot to learn.
"This is the stage you want to shine on and that goes, not only for me, but for all the players in the squad."
German coach Voller has also been amazed by the full back's progress during the past 12 months.
Voller admits that Lahm is one of the brightest prospects in Die Bundesliga and has hailed the youngster's maturity.
The former international striker said: "He's a great talent. What amazes me the most is that tactically, he's already as smart as an old fox."
