Per Mertesacker has admitted he performed poorly in Germany's 2-0 loss to Slovakia.
Defender Per Mertesacker has acknowledged his own poor performance in the Germans' 2-0 defeat in Slovakia on Saturday.
The 20-year-old was given a harrowing time by Robert Vittek and conceded a first half penalty which gifted a lead to the Slovaks.
Mertesacker admitted: "That was without a doubt my worst international.
"I don't know what the problem was as physically everything is fine - I know that I have to face up to some criticism now.
"But I'll try to play a lot better next time and give my best in training to prove that this game was just a one-off.
"I must get it out of my head and put in a good performance on Wednesday, if I'm selected."
Mertesacker's colleague Thomas Hitzlsperger, who also endured an uncomfortable evening in Bratislava, believes that a lack of communication cost the Germans dearly.
"It's not just a question of the defence playing badly as the whole team has to defend," he added. "We have to start talking to each other more on the pitch."
