Germany coach Joachim Low has responded to the losses of Bastian Schweinsteiger to suspension and Julian Draxler to injury by calling up Marcell Jansen and Patrick Herrmann to his squad to face Kazakhstan on Tuesday.
Hamburg's Jansen, whose last international appearance came in September 2010, will provide cover to the defence - where captain Philipp Lahm may well be rested - while Herrmann could pick up his first cap.
The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder will link up with the senior squad for the first time direct from Israel, where he has been in action for Germany's under-21s.
Low had already reacted to the loss of Schweinsteiger by calling up Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sven Bender, who had withdrawn from the initial squad due to the flu, but is now fit to play in Nuremberg on Tuesday.
"I was bed-ridden for a week, but things have been looking up over the past few days," said Bender on the German Football Association's website.
"Now I feel a lot better and, although I am not 100 per cent, there are still a few days before the game."
Due to the shortage of defensive midfielders, Bender's chances of playing against Kazakhstan are high, and the chances of him being on the winning side for the first time at the fourth attempt are also high following Germany's 3-0 win in Kazakhstan on Friday.
"It would certainly be about time," he said. "I had hoped (to get a call from Low) because there are a few players with knocks.
"It's fantastic to have worked out. It was very hard for me to withdraw in the first place because I would have loved to have been involved from the beginning, but my health didn't allow it."
