The Valencia star suffered the slight problem after shooting practice and after meeting with the medical staff, coach Inaki Saez decided to rest him.
"After working on some shots we treated him and decided to wait again until the morning," said Spanish medical chief Genaro Borras.
"The problem persisted and we spoke with Inaki Saez about the situation and we decided to be careful."
Albelda's problem is not thought to be serious but the Spanish wanted to be cautious and prevent a major problem - as they have already lost Michel Salgado from their original squad.
Albelda's Valencia team-mate Vicente has also been struggling with a similar injury, but he is now ready for action again.
Both Albelda and Vicente - who should both start in the midfield for Spain - are likely to be fit for their opening clash against Russia in Faro on Saturday.
