Torres missing from Spain squad

Fernando Torres is a surprise omission from Spain's squad to face Romania.

Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres is a surprise omission from the Spain squad to face Romania in a friendly next week.

Torres has netted just twice in La Liga this season and has been replaced by Valencia's Fernando Morientes in Luis Aragones' squad.

"The four forwards who are in the squad are in better form than Torres at the moment," Aragones said of his decision to leave the highly-rated striker out.

"It is a friendly and we want to see some new things."

Former captain Raul has again been left out despite impressive performances for Real Madrid this term.

David Albelda, Pablo Ibanez, Xavi and Carles Puyol are all unavailable, allowing Aragones to include some new blood in his squad.

Javi Navarro has been called up for the first time under Aragones, while Deportivo La Coruna striker Javier Arizmendi and Valencia's David Silva are among the new faces in the squad.

Aragones added: "Nearly all the new players are Under-21 internationals and are in great form at the moment.

"Silva, for example, is a player of extraordinary quality. He can play on the right and left and behind the striker."
