Spain left it late to beat Iceland, while Liechtenstein claimed a 1-0 win over Latvia.
Spain kept their Euro 2008 quest just about on track with a scrappy 1-0 win over Iceland.
Luis Aragones' men have not impressed this term, but they secured their third win of the campaign on Wednesday.
Iceland made life difficult for Spain, but Andres Iniesta popped up with the winner nine minutes from time.
Spain trail leaders Northern Ireland by four points, although they have a game in hand.
Liechtenstein secured their first points in Group F when claiming a 1-0 win over Latvia.
The home side came into the game with a record of four defeats from as many games and having conceded 15 goals into the bargain.
But they ripped up the form book to leave Latvia in a state of disbelief.
Mario Frick proved to be the hero as he scored the only goal of the game on 17 minutes, pouncing on a pass into the box from Martin Buchel.
The result will have little impact on the overall qualification spots, as both sides are well down the pecking order, but it will do plenty for morale in Liechtenstein.
