Ten man France struggled to a 2-0 victory over the Faroe Islands.
Raymond Domenech's France struggled to a 2-0 victory in their World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands.
In a largely uneventful first half, Ludovic Giuly opened the scoring for the French on 37 minutes when he reacted first after Robert Pires had a shot blocked.
Thierry Henry thought he had doubled the visitors advantage five minutes before the break when he latched onto a Benoit Pedretti corner, but the Arsenal frontman hit the post with a header.
Five minutes after half-time the Faroe Islands appealed for a penalty but Scottish referee Craig Thomson adjudged Gael Givet not to have handled the ball.
Thomson reduced France to ten men though when he sent off their captain Patrick Viera in the 55th minute for foul and abusive language.
Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse calmed the nerves for Les Bleus with a 71st minute goal that put the result beyond doubt.
Meanwhile, Israel came from behind to beat Cyprus 2-1 in Tel Aviv.
Michalis Konstantinou put Cyprus into a shock lead on 58 minutes, but it was short lived as Israel equalised through Yossi Benayoun six minutes later.
Walid Badir sealed the win for Israel 15 minutes from the end.
