Group Four is extremely tight, with four teams holding realistic hopes of securing automatic qualification, and the Swiss will have headed into their home match looking for three points.
Things started off on the right footing as striker Alexander Frei fired them in front on five minutes.
The Swiss failed to press home their advantage and were stunned when Adoram Keise brought Israel level on 20 minutes.
Neither side found a winner and it will be Republic of Ireland and France who will have benefited from the result.
France fired out a warning to their Group Four rivals with a 3-0 win over Faroe Islands.
The French are struggling to recapture the form which made them the dominant force in world football at the turn of the millennium, but they were still far too good for the group's whipping boys.
Liverpool forward Djibril Cisse was the thorn in the side of the Faroes, as he netted twice and had a hand in the third as France moved level on points with Switzerland and Republic of Ireland at the head of affairs.
Cisse opened the scoring on 12 minutes, rising high above his marker to head home a teasing cross from Florent Malouda.
The second came shortly afterwards, with Suni Olsen inadvertently turning Cisse's cross into his own net.
The French failed to significantly add to their goal difference, as it took them until the 76th minute to add a third - with Cisse thumping home from the edge of the box.
