Martin's starting stats

Ronald Koeman and Louis van Gaal have met each other five times now (PSV v AZ and Southampton v Manchester United) and Van Gaal has won three with Koeman winning the other two. However, as with Super Sunday, the away manager has won all five meetings.

I was in the commentary box to see Manchester United's ninth win in 11 visits to St Mary's, but it didn't include a goal from Wayne Rooney. He has gone 11 matches in the Premier League without a goal - the longest streak of his entire career. He has scored five in 12 games against Southampton.

The last time Southampton won at home against Manchester United was 2003 with a goal from James Beattie. In total, Southampton have lost 23 of 33 Premier League meetings, conceding 73 goals.

Also See:

Graziano Pelle, who played for AZ under both Van Gaal and Koeman, scored two goals. David de Gea had conceded exactly one goal in each of the last five games against Southampton. He conceded two this time, but was still the hero. In front of him, the same back four had started all eight previous games this season - but Luke Shaw's injury ended that run.

A team has scored three in each of Southampton's home games so far - Everton, Southampton themselves (against Norwich) and now Manchester United.

Pass masters

Juan Mata's goal came after 44 passes

Juan Mata's goal came at the end of a 45-pass move, surely that is the most in the Premier League? Luke

MARTIN SAYS: Luke, you are right that it came at the end of a 45-pass move but that is not a record. Since Opta's stats began in 2006/07, that title goes to Nacer Chadli's goal for Spurs against QPR at the start of last season. The Belgian's strike came at the end of a 48-pass move.

The 45 passes that led to Mata's goal is the second longest in this time period - and it's worth pointing out that the 45 passes do not include Memphis Depay's shot onto the post or Mata's shot for the goal itself.

Mata's team-mate Ashley Young finished off a 37-pass move for Manchester United against Blackburn in 2012; the fourth longest sequence since 2006/07).

That was topped by a 40-pass move that led to a goal for Morgan Schneiderlin (see below for his contribution to Mata's goals) in 2014 - although he was playing for Southampton against Newcastle at the time.

Top five passing moves leading to a goal since 2006/07

  • 48 passes: Nacer Chadli, Tottenham v QPR (24/08/2014)
  • 45 passes: Juan Mata, Man Utd v Southampton (20/09/2015)
  • 40 passes: Morgan Schneiderlin, Southampton v Newcastle (13/09/2014)
  • 37 passes: Ashley Young, Man Utd v Blackburn (02/04/2012)
  • 33 passes: Gervinho, Arsenal v Wigan (03/12/2011)

Who made most passes?

For Juan Mata's 45-pass goal, which Manchester United player touched the ball the most? Scott

MARTIN SAYS: Great question! For the goal at St Mary's there were actually 45 passes from Manchester United players and two shots on goal.

It's no surprise to see Juan Mata himself up there with the most passes. The United playmaker made six passes and got the decisive touch, beating Martin Stekelenburg with a finish into the far corner.

He's joined by Wayne Rooney and Bastian Schweinsteiger, who completed six passes each, while full-backs Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia both made five passes. Memphis Depay too rattled off five passes and also had a shot which rebounded back off the post to Mata.

Every Manchester United outfield player passed the ball at least four times in the build-up to the goal - except one. Two-goal hero Anthony Martial did not touch the ball once.

Here's the full list of passes in the move…

  • Juan Mata - 6 (plus a shot which resulted in the goal)
  • Bastian Schweinsteiger - 6
  • Wayne Rooney - 6
  • Memphis Depay - 5 (plus a shot which hit the post)
  • Marcos Rojo - 5
  • Antonio Valencia - 5
  • Chris Smalling - 4
  • Morgan Schneiderlin - 4
  • Daley Blind - 4
  • Anthony Martial - 0
  • David de Gea - 0

Home comforts

Graziano Pelle gives Southampton the early lead
Image: Graziano Pelle loves scoring at St Mary's

Graziano Pelle always seems to score his goals at home, what is his record? Craig

MARTIN SAYS: Graziano Pelle's record currently stands at 14 home goals out of 16 meaning he has scored 87.5 per cent of his goals at St Mary's. There is no place like home for the Italian.

However, of players to have scored more than 10 Premier League goals, there are seven who have scored a higher percentage on their own patch than Pelle. David Wetherall leads the list with 14 out 15 (93.33 per cent) and Neil Ardley is second (11 out 12, 91.67 per cent). Below is a list of the rest of the top 10.

Players with higher % of Premier League home goals than Graziano Pelle (min 10 goals)

  • David Wetherall - 14 out 15 goals (93.33%)
  • Neil Ardley - 11 out 12 goals (91.67%)
  • Robbie Blake - 10 out of 11 goals (90.91%)
  • Wayne Routledge - 10 out of 11 goals (90.91%)
  • Ricardo Gardner - 9 out of 10 goals (90%)
  • Bryan Hughes - 9 out of 10 goals (90%)
  • Gary Penrice - 15 out of 17 goals (88.24%)

Ahead of Wednesday's North London derby, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has scored 13 goals for Arsenal in all competitions - and 12 of them have been at the Emirates with the other at Wembley. Interestingly, Aaron Ramsey has scored 14 of his last 16 away from home.

Tottenham Young-spurs

Son Heung-Min celebrates scoring the opening goal with team mates
Image: Spurs fielded the youngest side of the season oN Saturday

I know Tottenham's team on Sunday was the youngest Premier League team fielded this season. But how many starting XIs have been younger in history? Emma

MARTIN SAYS: Tottenham's side against Crystal Palace at the weekend had an average age of 24 years and 118 days. This was the youngest team of the season but doesn't even make it in to the top 10 in Premier League history.

The youngest team ever to play in the league was the Middlesbrough XI who turned out against Fulham in 2006. They had an average age of 20 years and 181 days.

That's more than two years younger than the second-placed team which is Arsenal, who fielded a team who had an average of 22 years and 237 days. The Gunners own four different positions in the top 10 set between the years 2008 and 2009.

  • 2005/06 Middlesbrough v Fulham 20 years 181 days
  • 2008/09 Arsenal v Portsmouth 22 years 237 days
  • 2007/08 Arsenal v Sunderland 22 years 315 days
  • 2000/01 Leeds United v Manchester United 22 years 341 days
  • 2008/09 Manchester City v Aston Villa 22 years 360 days
  • 1997/98 Everton v Bolton Wanderers 23 years 14 days
  • 2008/09 Arsenal v Wigan Athletic 23 years 27 days
  • 2007/08 Arsenal v Derby County 23 years 47 days
  • 1998/99 Everton v Middlesbrough 23 years 55 days
  • 1998/99 Everton v Leeds United 23 years and 58 days

London calling

Harry Kane takes on James McArthur and Wilfried Zaha
Image: Spurs and Palace are both currently in the top 10

If the league finished today would this be the record number of London teams finishing in the top 10? Jack

MARTIN SAYS: Currently four teams - West Ham, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Tottenham - all occupy places in the Premier League top 10, but this would not be a record for the Premier League.

The record stands at five set in 2008/09. That year Chelsea, Arsenal, Fulham, Spurs and West Ham all secured top-half finishes.

Although Watford are currently in 10th position, they are based in Hertfordshire and so do not count as a London team.

There is one team left who could gatecrash the top 10 and make it a record-equalling season for London clubs and that is Chelsea. Not many people would bet against that happening.
