Atletico Madrid missed the chance to close the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona after a 2-1 defeat at Sporting Gijon.

Antoine Griezmann broke the deadlock after 29 minutes with his 17th league goal of the season, but Sporting's Antonio Sanabria levelled late in the second half before Carlos Castro stroked home an 89th-minute winner as the home side edged closer to safety.

Diego Simeone's side will now hope Barcelona, who have an eight-point cushion and could open up a double-digit lead at the top of the table, drop points at Villarreal on Sunday.

A first-half goal from Willian Jose proved enough to give Las Palmas a hard-earned 1-0 win at Real Sociedad and boost their Primera Division survival hopes.

Willian Jose struck six minutes before half-time as the Islanders secured a fourth win in five games that has moved them five points clear of the drop, and just two points behind their opponents.

Ze Castro's late equaliser earned Rayo Vallecano a 2-2 draw against 10-man Granada in a battle between two relegation-threatened teams.
