And Villas-Boas was full of praise for an impressive Basel side, who led 2-0 through Valentin Stocker and Fabian Frei, only to be pegged back by Emmanuel Adebayor and Gylfi Sigurdsson.
"I think we limited the damage to give us the possibility of still getting through," said Villas-Boas.
"Within all the negatives, there is the positive of still being in the tie and going away from home to try and get through.
"It wasn't a bad result, everyone has great belief we can go through.
"This Basel team was probably the best team I have ever seen at White Hart Lane. All the recognition goes to a top opponent who we had to play here tonight."
Basel coach Murat Yakin said: "I'm perhaps annoyed that we have not won tonight.
"We got off to a great start and focused on what we had to do and set out to attack.
"We scored the opener and quickly added the second, and obviously it is a pity we could not add more, but we were playing against a good side in Tottenham.
"The draw was good for us and certainly a positive ahead of the second leg."
