Celtic retained their Clydesdale Bank Premier League title on Sunday after a 4-1 victory at home against Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Celtic had a Champions League clash with Barcelona in the Nou Camp looming when they travelled to Paisley to take on St Mirren but they were at their tenacious and energetic best as they outclassed the Buddies. Gary Hooper opened the scoring in the 15th minute and from there the visitors went from strength to strength, although it was a mistake by Saints goalkeeper Craig Samson which allowed Efe Ambrose to knock in the second three minutes later. A Victor Wanyama double before the break - the first a half-volley, the second a drive from 25 yards - rendered the second half a non-event. However, the Parkhead side had not finished scoring as Tony Watt's late header allowed the champions to head for Catalonia on the back of a sixth straight victory that stretched their lead in the SPL to five points.

A trip to play Hearts at Tynecastle is traditionally one of Celtic's most difficult fixtures but this time Neil Lennon's side were ruthless in their destruction of the home side. The Hoops had stuttered in previous weeks but returned to form, starting when striker Lassad Nouioui gave them an early lead. The Edinburgh side created and missed come chances and were made to pay when Celtic extended their lead through Mikael Lustig's close-range strike and a Ryan Stevenson own goal. It was all too easy for the Parkhead men who added a late fourth from Gary Hooper and there was time for keeper Fraser Forster to save a Marius Zaliukas penalty.

SPL new boys Ross County put up a stout resistance when they travelled to Parkhead three days before Christmas but they were eventually blown away by a Celtic side who came alive after the break. The visitors missed two great chances before the break and were punished ruthlessly for their profligacy. Skipper Scott Brown opened the scoring with striker Gary Hooper heading in a second soon afterwards to ensure the points would stay in Glasgow. Hooper added the third, again with his head, before James Forrest came off the bench to score with a fine solo effort.

Gary Hooper helped himself to a brace as Celtic moved 12 points clear at the top of the table with a comprehensive win over Dundee United. The former Scunthorpe striker put the finishing touch to a swift Celtic counter-attack in the 19th minute before Victor Wanyama made it two with a close-range header before the break. With 10 minutes remaining Hooper killed United off with a deft flick from a Georgios Samaras pass before substitute Scott Brown rounded off a good day's work with a left-foot curler which gave United keeper Radoslaw Cierzniak no chance. It was the second time in four days the Hoops had scored four goals - they beat Hearts 4-1 at home - to tighten their grip on the title.

Celtic highlighted their domestic supremacy with another convincing win over Dundee United at Parkhead. Stuart Armstrong's early strike shocked the home side but that was quickly cancelled out by Efe Ambrose's header. Midfielder Kris Commons and striker Anthony Stokes both helped themselves to a brace each and Joe Ledley's strike sent the Tannadice side back to Tayside pointless. United striker Johnny Russell scored almost on the final whistle but it was a mere consolation as Neil Lennon's side hosts moved 18 points clear at the top of the table.
