Ike Opara scored in the final minute of stoppage time to secure the victory for Kansas City as they extended their lead in the Eastern Conference to four points over Montreal.
Salt Lake took the lead through Robbie Findley's goal in the 56th minute but went a man down 11 minutes later when Chris Wingert was shown his second yellow card and Soony Saad got the equalised a minute later.
The loss ended Salt Lake's unbeaten streak of 12 matches across all competitions.
In Los Angeles, the Galaxy beat Vancouver 2-1 for their third win of the month, moving three spots up the Western Conference standings to third position, just a point behind Portland.
Jose Villarreal and Gyasi Zardes scored for the Galaxy, who started the day in sixth place but vaulted past Vancouver, FC Dallas and Colorado on the back of this result.
Camilo scored his MLS-best 13th goal of the season in the 19th minute for the Whitecaps.
Meanwhile, Toronto's scoring woes continued as they drew 0-0 with New York, their third straight match without a goal.
Toronto played without top strikers Danny Koevermans and Robert Earnshaw, who were out with injuries. They have not scored since the 3-3 draw on 3 July with Montreal.
New York managed just one shot on goal in the first half a low Thierry Henry shot that was comfortably held by Toronto's Joe Bendik.
